I got up early Friday morning so I could cram before the appointment with the hepatologist. Unfortunately Mr. Murphy had imposed his law on the internet so I could not look up the references I needed using the hotel's wifi. Jennifer later demonstrated that the problem was somewhere between the keyboard and the chair because she could get on just fine. I was just left with playing computer games and waiting for the dawn. We arrived at the doctor's office and went through the routine. I had just enough time to connect to the hospital's wifi and get the last minute information I needed. I was ready.
A male nurse checked Pearl's vital signs. We saw him write 116 next to her height. We asked about it and he said it was cm not inches. Earlier in the week Jennifer had a call from someone else in the medical industry and they had asked how tall Pearl was. Jennifer had said 114 in. A few minutes later the lady called back and asked if Pearl had a growth disorder. Jennifer said "No, why?" The person on the line said that 114 in. was over 9 ft tall. It all makes sense now!
We got into the examining room and as Pearl watched a movie we talked to the doctor. We reported that everything was going well. She was not itching at all...no sign of Crohns...no fevers...no dehydration...she learned how to swim. Dr. Campbell showed us Pearl's growth chart - she has gone from almost falling off the height and weight standards to being exactly at the 50th percentile. She is developing normally. Then Dr. Campbell asked if we had any other concerns. Jennifer and I looked at each other and we both thought "the only concern we have is that the next question will have something to do with changing or adding a medicine." We have read enough of Proverbs to know that there are times in this world when the best thing to do is shut your mouth, hold your breath and let the river take you where it will. The doctor never brought up the options we were worried about and neither did we.
We have crossed some raging rapids and the currents are tricky but for now the Archangel Micheal has rowed the boat ashore and now Pearl sits on an island of calm. And this island just happens to have a Disney World on it. We wanted Pearl to take her Make a Wish trip when she was well enough to enjoy it. Barring an unforeseen downturn in her health, her trip is coming at a good time.
